First, different medical disciplines have to come together, namely, Radiology, Pathology, and Oncology. Then, to sell a new concept to laboratories, BioImagene’s customers in the U.S. and abroad, there’s not only an Art, but a Science used to gauge the marketplace and pinpoint early adopters in order to maximize a limited consultative sales force.

I asked Martin what thought leadership means to becoming Number One. His reply:

“Thought leadership is the driving force behind our success. We need to think hard. We have to think broad. What are the key clinical applications we should focus on to make our customers successful in what they do? Success for our customers is improving the standard of care, making the quality go up, making the costs go down. if we can bear those in mind, then thought leadership is what we use to make sure we move in those directions.”

Mike Critelli, who retired in 2007 as executive chairman and CEO of Pitney Bowes, Stamford, CT, is more active than ever.

In this podcast, he shares his special brand of thought leadership, which continues by taking the road less traveled. This has been a recurring theme throughout Mike’s career, which included roles as head of Human Resources and General Counsel at Pitney Bowes. As you listen to the podcast, thought leadership can be a lifelong endeavor.

Read more about the twists and turns in Mike Critelli’s career by going to his Open Mike blog. One of Mike’s many accomplishments during his long tenure at Pitney Bowes was the strategic pursuit of health, wellness, and prevention for Pitney Bowes’ employees.

In Randy Vogenberg’s April 2010 podcast, he alluded to Pitney Bowes as a Fortune 500 employer that has lead the way on health and wellness initiatives with employees—long before such initiatives have been adopted by employers large and small.

Mike now is active on a variety of business and community activities that sustain his thought leadership and make him sought after as a corporate board member, speaker, advisor, and advocate.

The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, that recently adopted the business name NARSAD, as The World’s Leading Charity Dedicated to Mental Health Research,” has organized the Healthy Minds Across America national campaign to reinforce May as Mental Health Awareness month. Healthy Minds brings the latest scientific developments to the attention of consumers, patients, families, and physicians in a series of publicly accessible forums, in partnership with than 40 medical institutions around the U.S.

Two thought leaders involved in Healthy Minds Across America are Benita Shobe, NARSAD’s president and CEO and Dr. Jack Barchas, professor of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and psychiatrist-in-chief at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Barchas serves on NARSAD’s Scientific Council.

In the podcast, Benita Shobe describes the vision and how Healthy Minds Across America, has, and will continue to evolve. She elaborates on the campaign’s objectives of informing consumers, patients, physicians, and the public at-large on important scientific discoveries in mental and behavioral health.

Maya Rockeymoore, PhD, president and CEO of Global Policy Solutions, based in Washington, DC, shares insights on how ideas, information, and strategy—the thought leadership of advocates and early adopters—is contributing to an important public health initiative to prevent obesity and its related chronic diseases. First Lady Michelle Obama recently announced her personal involvement heading a nationwide program to reverse the obesity epidemic among children.

Dr. Rockeymoore discusses the Healthy Communities Initiative, a national program with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Akin to the anti-smoking campaign started in the 1960’s, she lays out a Big Picture campaign, a decades-long strategy mobilizing elected officials, administrators, the press, and grassroots advocates at U.S., state, and local levels towards improving the quality of life for millions of Americans through the prevention of obesity. Thought leadership is the currency that propels this important public health issue that will transform the American infrastructure and make everyday changes to individuals’ attitudes and behavior.

In the podcast, Getting from Here to There, Dr. William Streck, CEO of Bassett Healthcare Network, reflects on the incremental steps that physicians and health systems may adopt to manage escalating healthcare costs, of which 30% results in waste.

A Colloquium, conducted in September 2009, in Washington, DC, brought together a several employed-physician model health systems to share how their success at providing high-quality care at reasonable cost can adapted by prevalent fee-for-service models, that reward physicians for prescribing more procedures and tests. One of the keys to turning around healthcare expenditures is to get physicians to use comparative tools that will help them make the right decisions and changes in their behavior.

He describes the role that Government, exerted through Medicare, may well play in effecting change throughout the U.S. healthcare system.

Whether these measures happen quickly enough to avert the pending crisis, remain to be seen.
